A multiplex is simply a block of frequencies which contain radio and data services. By using digital technology, more services can be carried in these blocks than a traditional FM spectrum, which means there is more room for data and stations.

So who owns multiplexes ?

Well, Ofcom offers licences for multiplex where interested parties can bid on. Once a new multiplex is awarded by Ofcom, the winning bidder then seek out services (i.e., radio stations) to broadcast on it.

There is one national commercial multiplex owner (Digital One), which operates eight services including local transmissions. Digital One broadcasts on channel 11D in England and 12A in Scotland.

The BBC has a separate national multiplex for its services. There are local multiplexes around the UK, each broadcasting an average of seven services, plus the local BBC station in the area.

The BBC national digital radio multiplex broadcasts on channel 12B.
